Get Your Feet in the Game: A Guide to the Flying Home Competitions

Whether you’ve competed for years or have never stepped onto a contest floor, there’s a competition at Flying Home for you. Two are pure fun, two come with bigger prizes, and all four are a chance to dance in front of a crowd that’s cheering you on.

Just for fun: the late night comps

No sign-up, no cost, no pressure. Show up, jump in, and dance until you’re tapped out.

Flying Home’s Fanciest Feet
Friday late night, 12:30 AM, ArtsCenter
A solo jazz comp. Bring your fanciest moves and keep dancing until you’re tapped out. Last one on the floor takes it.

Flying Home’s Fastest Feet
Saturday late night, 12:30 AM, ArtsCenter
Grab a partner and hang on. The music keeps getting faster, and couples get tapped out as the tempo climbs. How long can you keep up?

The Mix and Match comps

In a mix and match, you don’t bring a partner. You’re paired up at random, so it’s all about how you dance with whoever you’re matched with.

Open Switch Competition
Saturday
Open to all attendees, any role. Lead, follow, and everything in between, switching throughout each dance.

Finals work a little differently. Every finalist dances with every other finalist, then the finalists rank their favorite partners. Those rankings decide the winners by relative placement. Winners take home free passes to several regional events.

  • Register by 2:15 PM Saturday

  • Prelims at 5 PM, CCC

  • Finals around 9 PM during the main dance with Keenan McKenzie and the Riffers

Newcomer Competition
Sunday
If you’ve never entered a Lindy Hop contest, or the open-level comps seem intimidating, this one’s for you. The goal is to have fun, dance to the music, and connect with your partner. Judges will be watching for Lindy Hop style, partnership, musicality, creativity, presence, and personality.

  • Register by 2:30 PM Sunday

  • Prelims at 5 PM, CCC

  • Finals at 8 PM during the farewell dance with DJ Omar

How to register
For the late night comps, just show up. For the Open Switch and Newcomer competitions, sign up at the front desk at CCC or on the registration form.

Not competing? Come watch.
A loud crowd makes every comp better. Cheer on your friends, cheer on strangers, and maybe you’ll be the one signing up next year.
